The objectives of this study were to establish the extent to which information science schools in Kenya offered courses that imparted competencies and skills required by health information professionals; and to establish a range of competencies, skills and attitudes required by health librarians in Kenya in order to be effective in the changing health environment. To reduce healthcare worker shortages in sub-Saharan Africa, medical schools have increased enrolment. However, this
expansion has not been accompanied by adequate increases in faculty size or physical infrastructure.
Consequently, classes are overcrowded, and may lead to reduction in the quality of training, especially during clinical clerkships. Aiming to expose medical students to rural working environments and reduce overcrowding at the
main teaching hospital, in 2012 Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College(KCMUCo) introduced a 12-week clerkship
rotation.

Aligning strategies and priorities between external (client programs) and internal (organizational) KM is challenging. Save the Children’s Department of Global Health has recently completed the design of several different KM strategies at the organizational, project, and country office levels. During this session, we’ll talk about the processes and resources used to develop those strategies and the many lessons learned. We’ll also discuss the general outlines of the strategies, which you can consider when designing strategies for your own project or organization.

It is hoped that this background paper supported by the interactive discussions at the convention will help all of us including the People’s Council of Education to initiate a strong countervailing process and movement which will stimulate a re-thinking in the direction content and relevance of health sciences education in the country making it more relevant to people’s needs and health for All. Current indicators used to measure efforts and progress in HRH are limited and often unreliable. These limitations constrain country, donor, and program efforts to identify and address gaps in HRH and to track progress over time. The predominant model of public health commodity supply chains in developing countries is one dominated by a central medical store (CMS). In this model, the CMS plays the pivotal role of procurement, storage and warehousing of all health commodities before they are distributed to the next level in the supply chain. Challenges with technical and organization capacity at the CMS level has led to longstanding difficulties in creating sustainable performance improvements in several countries.

In collaboration with the MEPI eLearning technical working group, CapacityPlus and the MEPI coordinating center organized and conducted a workshop to complete draft eLearning strategic plans for MEPI-supported institutions, share knowledge and experiences, and build a supportive network of eLearning collaborators. The workshop, which was held in Gaborone, Botswana, February 24–27, 2014, brought together representatives from 11 MEPI-supported schools and one MEPI consortium. [from publisher]

CapacityPlus hosted a knowledge-sharing and dissemination event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on March 18. The three-hour program featured presentations on key messages from the 2014 Prince Mahidol Award Conference, which focused on transformative learning for health equity; the World Health Organization’s recommendations for health worker education and retention; and innovative approaches and tools developed by CapacityPlus in collaboration with global and national partners.

CapacityPlus compiled and analyzed literature on gender discrimination in higher education, including health worker preservice education. Additional information was gathered by contacting institution staff and reviewing institutional websites. Presented at the 2014 Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Pattaya, Thailand on January 27–31, 2014, this poster summarizes the review, highlights lessons learned by the Kenya Medical Training College, and recommends key actions that stakeholders can take at institutional and governmental levels to counter gender discrimination.

CapacityPlus, with the USAID ASSIST Project and the World Bank, cohosted a knowledge-sharing and dissemination event at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, on February 18. The three-hour program focused on the latest evidence from country applications of innovations to strengthen health workforce recruitment, retention, and productivity. [from introduction]
