"Midwifery is a key element of sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health (SRMNH)," write the authors of The State of the World’s Midwifery 2014 report.

The report focuses on mostly low- and middle-income countries where more than 92 percent of the world's maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths occur.

The report analyses the role midwives play in four domains: availability of SRMNH health, accessibility to a minimum amount of care, acceptability to
midwives as health care workers and increasing quality, especially midwifery education, regulation and the strength of professional organizations.
