Resource Spotlight: Partnering with Faith-Based Organizations
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have a long history of providing health services to people and communities most in need. Faith-based organizations often deliver 25% to 50% of all health care services for entire countries, often in the most inaccessible and impoverished areas. The WHO’s 2004 World Health Report estimates that FBOs make up 20% of all organizations combating HIV/AIDS.
The HRH Resource Center has resources that address partnering with FBOs to improve human resources for health, such as:
Engaging Local Non-Governmental Organizations in the Response to HIV/AIDS
This paper draws on an extensive literature review of local non-governmental organization (NGO) engagement (including local faith based organizations), the direct experience of Pact ’s rapid response HIV/AIDS grants program known as Community REACH, and formal and informal interviews with the Pact Community REACH grantees.
The four sections of the document:
- outline some successful strategies of local NGO engagement;
- examine local NGO strengths and weaknesses;
- provide advice to donors on effective and sustainable partnerships; and
- describe four funding models that harness the strengths of local NGOs to effectively respond to HIV/AIDS.

Global Religious Health Assets Mapping (GRHAM)
GRHAM is a Christian Connections for International Health (CCIH) initiative, in collaboration with numerous partners, to increase the awareness of Faith-based Organizations (FBOs) in providing essential health services around the world. GRHAM strives to put FBOs and Christian Health Associations (CHAs) “on the map” to improve networking, including collaboration with and between Christian health associations, medical missions, ministries of health and multilateral donors. GRHAM will eventually include an extensive and comprehensive online database of FBO health facilities, organizations, and programs that can be easily searched and browsed.

Planning, Developing and Supporting the Faith-Based Health Workforce: African Church Health Associations’ Human Resources for Health Mini-Forum
The African Church Health Associations’ Human Resources for Health Mini-Forum was sponsored by the Capacity Project to re-energize the CHA’s human resources working group. The objectives of the forum were to: expand the HRH knowledge base; help develop a critical mass of faith-based HRH advocates; clarify the "Terms of Reference" for an HRH working group and plan for sustainability and next steps; and to generate action plans for HRH practices and identify technical assistance needs.
