International Conference on Scaling Up

The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) will host the International Conference on Scaling Up: An Essential Strategy to Attaining Good Health for All from December 3-5, 2008 in Rajendrapur, Bangladesh.

The conference will attempt to build on existing knowledge, principles, and challenges of scaling up while identifying best practices in scaling up health programs by focusing on the following topics:

  • Exploring challenges and opportunities posed by scaling up in urban areas
  • Reviewing the potential for and challenges of the use of technologies for scaling up (e-health)
  • Examining issues in scaling up of capacity development efforts in public health including training of health workers
  • Assessing the role of health systems and the principles of primary health care in scaling up
  • Developing a call to action for the implementation of scaled up health programs based on practical lessons learned

Some low-income countries have had great success in scaling up in certain areas but less success in others. These countries could have their progress accelerated by national scaling up of health programs. Developing nations face both new challenges and new opportunities for health care delivery. The conference aims to foster discussion and debate, to share good practices in the field, to synthesize knowledge from both successful and unsuccessful efforts, and to raise awareness on the need for scaling up to help attain the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for 2015.
