Resource Spotlight: Labour Market for Human Resources for Health in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
This paper provides an introduction to the terms and tools of labour market analysis for those with little or no formal training in economics. It also connects these labour market principles to real-world case studies from LMIC. The data needed to examine labour markets is also noted to allow human resource practitioners to begin their own empirical examination of health worker labour markets in LMIC.
The paper begins with vignettes from three LMIC: Thailand, Rwanda
and Kenya. Then it describes the basics of labour markets and illustrates why understanding these concepts can help to address such workforce challenges as described in the vignettes. Topics include issues such as task shifting, health worker productivity and performance, and health workforce indicators. [adapted from author]
